Pronounced just as it appears (ka-tah’-din), Katahdin is the tallest mountain in the U.S. state of Maine and the northern end of the iconic Appalachian Mountain Trail. “Katahdin” is a word meaning “the greatest mountain” from the language of the Penobscot Nation of native Americans. At 5,268 feet, Katahdin may be overlooked among major mountains — but it is a truly breathtaking sight when it looms into view among the rolling hills of northern Maine.
